Purpose
First United Methodist Church Day School is an outreach ministry to children, parents and families of the Rio Grande Valley. The purpose of FUMC Day School is “to provide children a safe and loving environment in which to nurture spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual and physical growth through developmentally appropriate and creative activities.” We also strive to serve parents by providing opportunities for education and fellowship. We teach our children through play and give them the pre-learning skills necessary for later years.

A non-refundable registration fee is required annually to enroll your child. The registration packet includes enrollment, medical, immunization and financial information. Registration for the Fall/Spring school year is open first to the families of currently enrolled students and their siblings in the Spring. Registration is opened one week later to the public. FUMC Day School embraces the diversity of the community and invites families of all faiths and nationalities. FUMC does not practice discrimination in regards to children or staff. If classes are full, you may request to be put on waiting list and you will be called if a space becomes available.
Note: State law mandates all children must be of appropriate age by Sept. 1, 2024. Currently, our school accepts children ages 12 months through 5 years old.
Tuition
Tuition is based on 10-monthly payments from August 2024 through May 2025.
5% discount if monthly tuition is paid in full per semester by September 15, 2024, and January 15, 2025.
Annual Registration/Building Fee: $600.00 per student

Instructional Philosophy
At FUMC Day School, we believe in child-centered play based learning which allows children to learn at their own individual pace through the natural process of play. Our program utilizes "Handwriting Without Tears" curriculum and incorporates the Weekly Reader Themes. Weekly activities focus on gross and fine motor skills, social interaction and creative expression. During their day children have an opportunity to play and interact with others their age while fostering independence, curiosity and problem solving skills. They also express themselves through art and music activities. Furthermore, throughout the day the teachers provide a safe, secure and loving environment for our students. Children who are two years and older also attend chapel once a week where they sing, pray and listen to Bible stories. We welcome parents to call the office during school hours to check on their child’s progress.
Classes & Staff
FUMC offers a Day School where children are taught in a caring and Christ-centered environment.
Children are placed in classes according to their age as of September 1st. Currently, our school accepts children ages 12 months through 5 years old. Children 12 months through 2 years may choose one of three programs: 2 day (Tuesday, Thursday) 3 day (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) 5 day (Monday- Friday) Our 3, 4 & 5 year old children are offered the 5 day program only.
Classes are kept small and each class is staffed by 2 teachers who are trained in CPR and First Aid. They also receive 24 hours of training annually by attending workshops on topics such as child growth and development, guidance and discipline, and age appropriate curriculum. FUMC Day School is licensed by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
Day School Board
The Day School Board is the governing body of the school and establishes policy, rules and regulations in cooperation with the Day School Director.
Jenny Bizzell
FUMC Dayschool Director
Jennifer Bizzell joined the staff of First United Methodist Church, McAllen as the secretary for the Day School in October of 2007. In September of 2015 she was offered the position of Interim Day School Director, which she graciously accepted. Before coming onto the staff at FUMC, she worked as a teller supervisor for 10 years.
